There’s a question worth asking in any organization right now: have we entered the post-conversation era of work?
It’s not hypothetical. Most of us have watched a Teams or Slack thread become far more complicated than the issue it was meant to solve. Somewhere along the way, “Can we hop on a quick call?” stopped being the obvious next step. For many people, the chat window isn’t just convenient—it’s preferred. And yet the more nuanced the issue, the more likely it is that written messages will create misunderstanding rather than clarity.
That’s not a generational problem. It’s an organizational one.
Text-based communication is excellent for sharing information. It’s far less effective for navigating disagreement, delivering feedback, building trust, or solving messy problems. Those conversations benefit from something technology still can’t fully replicate: tone, context, empathy, and real-time dialogue.
At HAVEN, we work with leaders at every level on this. Not because conversation is nostalgic, but because it’s foundational. The ability to navigate a difficult discussion, read a room, ask a thoughtful question, or sit comfortably in a moment of tension are leadership capabilities. Like any skill, they weaken when we stop practicing them.
The leaders who stand out know when a conversation is too important for a chat window. They pick up the phone. They walk down the hall. They make time to connect.
That’s not being old-fashioned. It’s being effective.
And if you’ve written three paragraphs, added two emojis to soften the message, and are considering a fourth follow-up “just to clarify”… it might be time for a conversation.
If we can help you ignite exceptional performance in your leaders and teams—one conversation at a time—we’d love to connect.
