You already know how to do this. In fact, you’ve probably been perfecting it since Day 1.
You know what I’m talking about…
The Monday priority becomes Wednesday’s parking lot item because something even bigger landed on Tuesday. The initiative that was absolutely critical two weeks ago is now fifth on a list that didn’t even exist last week. Your calendar is full. Your team is moving. There are a remarkable number of Slack messages. And yet, somehow, the feeling that you’re behind hasn’t gone away.
But here’s what nobody says in the all-hands meeting: running fast in multiple directions is not the same as making progress. It has the aesthetic of productivity. Speed without the strength of direction is just very expensive cardio.
A few small things that can help:
- Protect one decision.
Pick something small that doesn’t get revisited. Settled is a resource. Let one thing simply be done.
- Stop adding to the list before you subtract.
Every new priority should come with something that moves down or comes off the list. Make that trade visible.
- Find one thinking hour.
It feels indulgent until it saves you from a reactive decision you’ll spend days unwinding.
The goal isn’t to slow down. Most of us can’t. The goal is to know where you’re going while you’re running very fast.
At HAVEN, we help leaders and teams create clarity in the middle of complexity. Because when priorities are clear, decisions become easier, teams become more aligned, and momentum starts to feel like real progress, not just motion.
