Did you see it? If not, look again.
The moment this popped up on my feed, I thought about our invisible bridles at work. Benevolently, this could be about trust we build up over time with others. But it could also say something else about who we blindly follow, what cultural norms we unknowingly preserve, or what assumptions we unintentionally perpetuate.
Think, for a moment, about your meeting protocols, your conversational etiquette, and your hours expectations at work. Think about who you go to for advice, who you respect, and to whom you give the floor. And ask yourself: are these the best patterns to enable high performance? Is there something I’m not seeing or something we could do differently that might lead to better results? Better yet, ask your team the same questions!
As for me, it made me wonder about the yes traps I’ve fallen into over the years that went against my work-life aspirations for myself and my teams. Looking back, I can recall more than a few projects that I said yes to, driven by perceived obligations, that I would have been better off declining. How about you?
