The biotech industry, despite its rapid growth and innovation, continues to grapple with significant disparities in leadership diversity. Women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals remain underrepresented in executive and CEO positions, highlighting a persistent gap that demands attention.
The Current State of Diversity in Biotech
Despite the implementation of diversity and inclusion programs by many biotech companies, substantial progress is still required to achieve meaningful representation across all these underrepresented groups (McKinsey & Company) (Out & Equal). Here are some stats to consider:
Disparities continue to arise from a lack of diverse educational pipelines, role models, and reliance on homogenous hiring networks. Even with existing diversity programs, there’s still a lot of work to be done.
What is We Rise Together?
In June 2015, Brad Hartman, Chief People Officer of BeBio, and HAVEN launched the We Rise Together (WRT) program aimed at breaking down barriers for women, minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities in the biotech industry. The program has two key components: a leadership development course and a 6-month mentorship opportunity where each participant is paired with a senior executive or board member from another biotech company. Together, participants dive into career development, peer learning, and invaluable networking, all within a supportive environment. Companies involved contribute senior leadership time and funding and all contributions from BeBio and HAVEN are pro-bono.
The Impact
Since its inception, nearly 60 Directors and VPs have participated in We Rise Together, citing significant career impacts and lasting relationships. The WRT program also raises funds for organizations like Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWISE) and Women in Science and Technology (WEST).
WRT embodies the power of coming together across differences, helping everyone get a seat at the table and a chance to rise. The next session will start in August of 2024.
